How Many Pounds Can a Toyota Tacoma Carry?

Another thing regarding the bed that is important to know is how much weight can the Toyota Tacoma carry in the bed?  The manufacturer calls this payload.

The payload for a vehicle is the maximum amount of weight it can safely carry and that includes the weight added in the cab.  For the 2021 models of Tacomas, you can expect to have a payload of 1,050 lbs to 1,445 lbs.  Remember that if you have a cab full of people and tools then you have to keep that in mind while loading up the truck bed.

Here is a breakdown of the 2021 Gen 3, 4-wheel drive payloads for each package to give you a rough idea of what your Tacoma could carry.

Payload of 1,050 lbs

Limited Double Cab 5’ & 6’ Cab V6 AT SE, GS

SR Double Cab 5’ bed V6 AT (GS)

4WD SR5 Double Cab 5’ & 6’ Bed V6 AT (GS)

4WD TRD Off Road Double Cab 5’ Bed V6 AT (SE)

4WD TRD Off Road Double Cab 6’ Bed V6 AT (SE)

4WD TRD Pro Double Cab 5’ Bed V6 AT (Natl)

4WD TRD Sport Double Cab 5’ Bed V6 AT (GS)

4WD TRD Sport Double Cab 6’ Bed V6 AT (GS)

Payload of 1,135 lbs

4WD TRD Off Road Double Cab 5’ bed V6 MT (SE)

4WD TRD Pro Double Cab 5’ Bed V6 MT (Natl)

4WD TRD Sport Double Cab 5’ Bed V6 MT (GS)

Payload of 1,260 lbs

4WD TRD Sport Access Cab 6’ Bed V6 MT (Natl)

Payload of 1,285 lbs

SR Access Cab 6’ Bed V6

              4WD SR5 Access Cab 6’ Bed V6 AT (Natl)

4WD TRD Off Road Access Cab 6’ Bed V6 AT (GS)

4WD TRD Sport Access Cab 6’ Bed V6 AT (SE)

Payload of 1,445 lbs

SR Access Cab 6’ Bed I4 AT (SE)

SR5 Access Cab 6’ Bed I4 AT (Natl)

To put this in perspective on what you could carry here are some breakdowns of each payload with 4 people weighing in at 180 lbs each in the Truck:

Payload of 1,050 lbs

4 people x 180 = 720 lbs

You could potentially fit a full-sized refrigerator in the bed of the truck to meet the payload capacity.

Payload of 1,445 lbs

              4 people x 180 = 720 lbs

You could potentially carry four and a half beer kegs in the bed of the truck.

Note:  Please understand that these calculations are hypothetical and do your own research on the type of truck you own and how much things weigh. The age of a vehicle and many other factors could affect the actual payload of your vehicle.

Conclusion – Tacoma Bed Measurements

There are so many different models and trims with the Tacoma so it is always good to double-check with your dealer on what yours specifically can handle.

While the Tacoma Truck bed dimensions typically do not change per the latest generations, the payload of the vehicle can differ quite dramatically.  If you see your friend Tacoma hauling a huge load of river rock it doesn’t necessarily mean that your Tacoma can handle that amount.

Since this is an off-roading website, I have to tell you that a 6-foot bed could end up restricting the number of trails you can do.  This is because the longer bed causes the need for a longer wheelbase which hurts you in your break-over angle.  If you are doing light wheeling, it’s probably not a problem so don’t let this stop you from getting max storage capacity out of your truck!
