Different Types of Jeep Wranglers

Last Updated on April 4, 2023 by Paul S.

There are many different types of Jeep Wranglers to get your fix. If you’re concerned that one type of Wrangler may not get you offroad do not worry because they are all seriously offroad capable! In total there are 9 different trims but we will cover the core 7.  Here are the core trims available:

  • Sport
  • Sport S
  • Sport Altitude
  • Willy’s
  • Sahara
  • Sahara Altitude
  • Rubicon

Read on if you want to learn specifics about each trim level.

Wrangler Sport

The first type of Jeep Wrangler is the Wrangler Sport. This is the most basic bare-bones Wrangler you can get. The biggest concern from people is if it will be off-road capable. The answer to that is H** yea!  I have owned one for 3 years now and it is unstoppable as far as medium difficulty trails are concerned. If you happen to be following a jacked-up Rubicon in Moab then maybe take a different path but for the most part, you will be happy with your choice.

You are not going to get any of the fancy bells and whistles found on the trims below but you will get 4wd and the engine options are the following:

Engines available:

Jeep Wrangler V6
The Wrangler V6 that comes standard on most trims
  • 3.6 L V6 VVT Engine
  • 2.0 L I4 Turbo Engine
  • 3.0 L V6 Turbo Diesel Engine
  • 3.6 L V6 ETorque Engine

One of the biggest problems I have with the Sport is the manual windows and locks. Coming from experience this gets really annoying fast especially if you live in hot country!  But if you don’t mind the everyday annoyance and the concern about locking yourself in your car then you can save a bit of money going this route! The Sport is available with power windows.

Ground clearance for the Jeep Wrangler Sport is 9.7 inches.

Wrangler Sport S

The Wrangler Sport S is simply the Sport but with some added features that will increase your starting price.

Here are some of the upgrades you get with the Sport S compared to the Sport:

  • Power heated mirrors
  • Automatic headlamps
  • 17 inch silver aluminum wheels (the Sport only comes with black wheels)
  • Deep tint sunscreen windows

Interior:

  • Media hub with 2 charge usb ports
  • Alpine speakers available
  • Power windows
  • Automatic dimming rear view mirror
  • Security alarm
  • Blind Spot and cross path detection are available
  • Push button start is not available with the S but is available with the Sport???

Engines available:

  • 3.6 L V6 VVT Engine
  • 2.0 L I4 Turbo Engine
  • 3.0 L V6 Turbo Diesel Engine
  • 3.6 L V6 ETorque Engine

Ground clearance for the Jeep Wrangler Sport S is 9.7 inches. Learn more about ground clearance and the Wranglers angles here.

Wrangler Sport Altitude

This is our last category for the Sport and it is the Altitude. With the Altitude, you will pay for a bit of styling and some other features.

The upgrades include the following:

Wrangler Willys

Jeep Willys

The Willys is paying homage to world war II Willys MB that helped serve the USA and eventually became the Wrangler. It was used as a light military vehicle and was the first largley produced four-wheel drive vehicle.

The Willys has come a long way and have learned a lot of tricks. Here are the upgrades from the previous models you can find:

Exterior:

  • Black Grille
  • 17-inch Moab black aluminum wheels
  • LT255/75R17C Tires (32.1-inch diameter tires)
  • Xtreme Recon 35 Inch Tire Package Available
  • Anti-spin differential rear axle

The ground clearance for the Willys is 9.7 inches. This is our first bump up from the 9.7 inches of clearance!

Wrangler Sahara

Jeep Wrangler Sahara
Jeep Wrangler Sahara with its top off! Check out the shiny fender flares.

The Saraha gets us into something fancier.

The biggest thing that you will quickly notice between the Sahara and the Sport trims are the fender flares and the hardtop are painted to match the body color. This gives it a shiny flashy look but also can get banged up really quick out on the trail.

The upgrades from the Sport packages include the following:

Exterior:

  • The grill of the vehicle is going to have gloss black rings
  • 18 inch polished wheels with gray spokes
  • The same tire size but your sidewall will shrink by 0.4 inches due to the larger rim
  • Integrated Off-Road Camera
  • 220 Amp Alternator

Interior:

  • Rear window defroster is standard
  • Black Interior Accents
  • Hardtop Headliner is standard
  • Wizard Black Instrument Panel Bezels

Engines available:

  • 3.6 L V6 VVT Engine
  • 2.0 L I4 Turbo Engine
  • 3.0 L V6 Turbo Diesel Engine
  • 3.6 L V6 ETorque Engine

The ground clearance for the Sahara is 10 inches. This is our first bump up from the 9.7 inches of clearance!

Wrangler Sahara Altitude

Here are some upgrades from the Sahara package you will get:

  • 18 inch gloss black aluminum wheels
  • Same sized tires but in the all-terrain model
  • Leather seats are standard
  • Freedom panel storage bag
  • Leather-wrapped brake handle and shift knob are standard
  • Most of the remaining items remain the same.

Wrangler Rubicon

The Rubicon is the vehicle to get out on the trail and tear some things up. This vehicle is packed with goodies to help you on the difficult trails that the other trims can’t follow.

If your plan was to modify a cheaper model and bring it up to par with the Rubicon you will be dumping a lot of money into upgrades. For some, it’s easier to just start with the Rubicon if you can afford it!

Here are some differences between the Rubicon compared to the Sahara:

Exterior:

  • Hood with Air Vents
  • 17 inch Wheels with Black Pockets come standard
  • LT285/70R17C BSW Off-Road Tires ( roughly 32.7 inch diameter tires)
  • Wheel Flare Extensions are available
  • Steel bumper is available
  • Xtreme Recon 35 inch tires are available
  • Heavy Duty Dana 44 Front & Rear Axle Both lockable
  • Off-Road plus mode
Wrangler Rubicon All Terrain Tires

The Wrangler’s EcoDiesel Engine
  • 3.6 L V6 VVT Engine
  • 2.0 L I4 Turbo Engine
  • 3.0 L V6 Turbo Diesel Engine

Different Types Of Jeep Wranglers Wrap up!

There are so many choices and even more choices than the important ones mentioned above. Generally, the list starts from cheapest to most expensive but depending on certain packages you get you can go over some trims.

As stated in the beginning any of these different types of Jeep Wranglers are going to get you into places you have never seen and over obstacles you didn’t think a vehicle could go over. So try not to get stuck into the details of everything and just pick one and get wild!
