2022 4runner Ground Clearance

Last Updated on February 15, 2023 by Paul S.

While the 4runner can be used to get groceries and take the kids to soccer practice, it can also be used to get out on some wild trails!  The 2022 4runners stock ground clearance is plenty to get you started!

The 2022 4runner ground clearance ranges from 9 inches to 9.6 inches depending on the trim that is chosen.

We will provide most of the 4wd trim levels below and their respective ground clearances so read on!

  • 4runner Trd Pro 4wd V6: 9.6 inches
  • 4runner SR5: 9 inches
  • 4runner SR5 Premium: 9.6 inches
  • 4runner Offroad Premium 4WD: 9.6 inches
  • 4runner TRD Offroad 4WD: 9.6 inches
  • 4runner Trail 4WD V6: 9.6 inches
  • 4runner TRD Sport 4WD V6: 9.6 inches
  • 4runner Limited 4WD V6: 9.6 inches

As seen above, most of the trims come standard with 9.6 inches of ground clearance. But how does this measure up to other vehicles?  Let’s compare these ground clearances to some other off-road capable vehicles.

  • Ford Raptor: 9.4 inches
  • Jeep Wrangler JL Sport: 9.7 inches
  • Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10.8 inches
  • Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk: 10.8 inches
  • Land Rover Defender: 11.5 inches
  • Ford Bronco: 11.6 inches

So in comparison, the 2022 4runner has some great ground clearance that can keep up with it’s competitors. I drive a Wrangler sport out on the trail and it has gotten me past some tough obstacles so with just one-tenth less the 4runner is going to be more than capable of keeping up.

Toyota 4runner Approach Angle

It’s all about the angles out on the trail!

Know your angles and that will keep you from scraping up your 4-wheeler.  The approach angle for the Toyota 4runner is 33-degrees.

4runner Departure Angle

Just as you arrived you need to understand how you are going to leave.  The departure angle for the Toyota 4runner is 26 degrees. This is slightly less than the approach angle so just understand that if you didn’t scrape on the front doesn’t mean you won’t scrape it on the backside.

Toyota 4runner breakover Angle

The breakover angle is also something that one needs to know if you are going to be comparing your 4runner against others.  The breakover angle for the 4runner is approximately 19.8 degrees.

If you skipped out on geometry class don’t worry so did we.  Check out this diagram produced by Chevy below that helps explain these angles!

The breakover angle is important because at some point you are going to be taking your rig over some bumps in the road. A larger breakover angle helps you get over those obstacles without worrying about messing up anything important below your vehicle.

One of the reasons people lift their vehicles is to increase all of their angles. This allows them to rock crawl almost anything out there!

Let’s compare the breakover angle of the 4runner to the Jeep Wrangler trims. The Jeep Wrangler Sport 4 door is 20.3 degrees, and the Jeep Wranlger Rubicon 4dr is 27.8 degrees.

So again the 4runner is lacking here a little bit even when compared to the base model of the Jeep but this shouldn’t be a problem for many basic to intermediate trails. If you plan to lift it and put on larger tires then there is no need to worry!

2022 4runner Ground Clearance Wrap UP

The ground clearance of the Toyota 4runner doesn’t really jump around too much on the select 4wd trims.

The 9.6 inches of ground clearance and some decent approach, departure, and breakover angles all add up to a vehicle that can hit the trails while still getting over that speed bump in the soccer practice parking lot.
